Body condition metrics explain fish movement in experimental streams

چکیده
Body condition refers to an array of physiological or nutritious states in animals, but body is typically measured using a single metric animal behavior studies. In this paper, we conducted three-day laboratory study evaluate whether metrics affected movement wild-caught creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) at 16 and 22°C. Movement was counted between two circular tanks connected by straight corridor, which equipped with pair passive integrated transponder antennas. Fish most frequent during periods darkness simulated photoperiod, more mobile individuals consistently moved frequently across the 3 days. general, better were than those poorer condition, different degrees. Specifically, per cent weight loss dry matter content (ratio wet versus dehydrated weight) predictors weight-at-length, used as surrogate animals. addition, length interacted affect fish movement, where smaller significantly that larger individuals. effects on activity similar This demonstrates may not always certain way. need be carefully selected when context behavior, should tested feasible.

Metrics of the perception of body movement.
Body movements are recognized with speed and precision, even from strongly impoverished stimuli. While cortical structures involved in biological motion recognition have been identified, the nature of the underlying perceptual representation remains largely unknown. We show that visual representations of complex body movements are characterized by perceptual spaces with well-defined metric prop...
متن کاملCondition-dependent movement and dispersal in experimental metacommunities.
Dispersal and the underlying movement behaviour are processes of pivotal importance for understanding and predicting metapopulation and metacommunity dynamics. Generally, dispersal decisions are condition-dependent and rely on information in the broad sense, like the presence of conspecifics. However, studies on metacommunities that include interspecific interactions generally disregard conditi...
متن کاملInfluence of Stream channel morphology and in-stream habitats on fish community in Golestan province Streams
Four streams with different sizes were selected for studying the effects of environmental factors on fish assemblages using indirect (Detrended Correspondence Analysis, DCA) and direct (Redundancy Analysis, RDA) gradient analysis in Golestan province. DCA of presence-absence and relative abundance data showed well gradient and linear model of species variability. In the within-site RDA, environ...
متن کاملChapter 8: Coldwater Fish in Wadeable Streams
Fish fauna of small coldwater streams of North America typically include trout and salmon, sculpins, minnow, sticklebacks, suckers, or lampreys (Hocutt and Wiley 1986). Standard sampling protocols provided herein apply primarily for trout and salmon because of their sport and commercial values (Johnson et al. 2007). As interest in nonsalmonid species grows, further development of sampling metho...
متن کاملFish introductions and light modulate food web fluxes in tropical streams: a whole-ecosystem experimental approach.
Decades of ecological study have demonstrated the importance of top-down and bottom-up controls on food webs, yet few studies within this context have quantified the magnitude of energy and material fluxes at the whole-ecosystem scale. We examined top-down and bottom-up effects on food web fluxes using a field experiment that manipulated the presence of a consumer, the Trinidadian guppy Poecili...
